UNIFORMS of the FLEET

22nd Century

In the 22nd century, the uniform of the Romulan fleet comprises black pants and boots, and a jacket in brown-silver-gold rectangular design. It's completet by belts around the waist and over the right shoulder, on which the rank insignia is posed (Star Trek Enterprise, pisode"Aenar").

23rd Century

The Romulan uniforms of the second half of the 23rd century had a female and a male version. Male and female officers wore a black shirts with long sleeves, and above it a clothing from metallic-silvery material. Its structure, similar to a medieval chain armor leads to the thought it may have had similar functions, too. Male officers wore pants in different colors, black, blue or red following the rank. A sash over the right shoulder also informed about rank and fleet-department. The lowest ranks had no sash. A black belt, black boots and gloves completed this uniform version. In some positions officers also wore helmets (Star Trek TOS, episodes "Balance of Terror" and "The Enterprise Incident").

24th Century

In the 60ies of the 24th century a Romulan dress uniform consists of a jacket in silver-grey color with geometrical pattern, padded shoulders and loose sleeves. The undershirt was black or grey, pants and boots were black. The sash had a slightly modified cut. It's color represented the department of the fleet, in which the officer served (RPG-Sourcebook "Way of D'Era"). Rank insignia and decorations were attached to it (Star Trek TNG "Die neutrale Zone").

The standart uniforms had the silver-grey jacket, too, but instead of the sashes two metallic belts in v-shape over both shoulders, clasped together in front with the insignia of the Romulan Empire, the bird of prey. The rank of the officer also could be read from these belts (Star Trek TNG various episodes).

The design of the fabric gave indication about the fleet and department of the officer (RPG-Sourcebook "Way of D'Era").

There were of course special uniform versions for harsh environments or hazard teams.

After the victory over the Dominion the uniforms were changed. First of all a greater uniformity was emphasized, the designation of singular fleets or houses was abolished. A design was chosen similar to the one used in the 22th century, in order to demonstrate the link to past history and great achievements of the Romulan people. The standart uniform now comprises black pants and boots, and a jacket with rectangular patterns in the colors grey, white, gold and brown. The belt with the insignia is worn again over the right shoulder. (Star Trek "Nemesis").

The Remans had own uniforms on behalf of their different physiology. These uniforms helped to protect them against high temperatures and light and provided an armor in close combat (Star Trek "Nemesis").

UNIFORMS of the TAL SHIAR

Since the second half of the 24th century the officers of the Tal Shiar wear black undershirt, black pants and boots and above a dark-grey padded jacket with double belt and shoulderbelt as standart uniform. The rank can be seen in the form of the belt and - other than the regular fleet - Tal Shiar also have rank pins on their collar, left and right side (Star Trek DS 9, episode "The die is cast" and others, Star Trek Voyager, episode "Message in a bottle").

Another version of the uniforms was similar to the design used in the fleet and comprised a grey jacket with padded shoulders and loose sleeves and the v-shaped metal belt over both shoulders, only the pattern of the fabric was altered (Star Trek TNG, episode "Face of the enemy").
